Synopsis
Almost unknown in the West, almost unheard of, a low profile country, yet in 2025 placed on the US list of countries on which travel restrictions have been imposed. I suspect many will be asking the same question as I did, when I was sent there for one year.
Authors Biography
Tam Macklin started flying in 1980 and since then has accrued over 14,000 hours in the air, most of them in helicopters. These hours were gained in many countries across the world and in various roles. Now retired, he has the time to reflect on jobs, on people, on opportunities and on the immense privilege of having had a career in aviation.

Great book!
A great gift for Christmas.
A really good read for either, those who wish to travel to that part of the world and understand the culture and the people, or those who are aviation minded.
Thoroughly enjoyable read
A great read, the author is very entertaining – you will not be disappointed!
An insight into a way of life and a country few us would ever experience. Something new on every page.
Great book. Very interesting.
Brings back memories of my time in the military, friends and banter part of daily life.
A great read
The author provides an informative and entertaining account of his unique experiences converting military helicopter pilots from an aging, Soviet era machine to an ultra modern, highly capable European replacement. What could possibly go wrong???
Great and very frank description of what must have been an entertaining and unique experience
Excellent book, very interesting and lots of information, great read
Interesting informative eye opener.
Interesting informative eye opener.
This book provides a dynamic and unique pilot’s-eye view of many years experience in frontline aviation. It ranges from early generation helicopters to latest state-of-the art machines that operate by day, by night and in all environments. Amazingly, this flying relied heavily upon individual skills, abilities and resources, the challenges of which can only be imagined. This remarkable book is an insight for everyone interested in aviation.

Great job Tam, interesting read. Nice to be able to relate to your day to day and passion for flying helicopters. (and a wee dog)
Fascinating read.
I know Turkmenistan very well, but I still learnt something. I walked around the Gates of Hell, but what fun it must have been to fly over. This book has the right balance of technical detail, passion for flying, human interest and travel writing. At the end I wondered what other flying adventures Tam had experienced elsewhere in the world. Perhaps the success of this book will encourage more stories. I hope so.
